The basics
What does a hardware
wallet actually do?
01
Create & protect keys
The wallet creates or holds the private keys used to authorize transactions.
02
Review the transaction
The device gives you a separate place to inspect transaction details before approval.
03
Sign on the device
The transaction is signed without requiring the private key itself to be handed to the computer or phone initiating the transaction.
What is a recovery seed?
The recovery seed is the backup from which a compatible wallet can restore access. It needs to be protected separately from the signing device.
What does “air-gapped” mean?
In a hardware-wallet context, it describes a workflow that transfers transaction information without a direct data cable or conventional network connection, often using QR codes or removable media.
Do I need a metal seed backup?
A hardware wallet and a seed backup solve different problems. The device is used for signing; the backup preserves recovery information if the device is lost or damaged.
